'Very smart move' – Odemwingie breaks down Arokodare's 'double run' that punished Russia

Former Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie has praised Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare for his intelligent pressing that led to Nigeria’s goal in their 1-1 draw with Russia in an international friendly in Moscow. 3g1p70

The match, held at Luzhniki Stadium, saw Nigeria benefit from a defensive lapse by Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

Speaking to Championat correspondent Oleg Lysenko, Odemwingie commended Arokodare for his awareness and movement off the ball that created the scoring opportunity.

“We spent almost the entire week analyzing such situations at the coaching courses,” Odemwingie said.

“I am an adherent of the old school – not to start an attack from your goal too often. Of course, Safonov made a mistake. But the Nigerian national team striker also made a very smart move.”

Odemwingie went on to explain how Arokodare’s positioning and change of direction forced the turnover.

“In English, this is called a double run: he went to press as if to the right, and when the goalkeeper lowered his eyes, he changed direction and ran to the left and intercepted the to the defender.”

The former West Brom and Lille forward also highlighted the growing importance of high pressing in modern football, pointing out how Nigeria’s tactical discipline paid off.

“Now many teams include high pressing, and it brought success to the Nigerian national team,” he added.

Arokodare’s goal ensured the Super Eagles avoided defeat in Moscow and provided a confidence boost ahead of fixtures.

The friendly offered valuable lessons for both teams, particularly in adapting to modern tactical demands.
